The Intervention Record
Objects do not enter the Archive unchanged.
Every accession undergoes a documented intervention designed to stabilise, preserve, and clarify its role within the living environment. This process is not restorative in the cosmetic sense, nor decorative in intent. It is a structural and material discipline applied to objects that already possess history.
The Intervention Record defines how an item moves from found condition to archival state.
Provenance & Assessment (The Found)
Before any intervention begins, each object is examined as an artefact.
Its origin, construction, and condition are assessed to determine whether it can withstand the demands of continued use. Existing marks, wear, and irregularities are documented in full. These are not treated as defects, but as evidence of material endurance and prior use.
Only objects with sufficient integrity, legibility, and potential for longevity are accepted into the Archive.
Material Intervention (The Transformation)
Intervention is a slow, manual process governed by material logic rather than trend or surface appeal.
Work is carried out using specialised, low-impact techniques appropriate to the object’s original construction. Timber, metal, fibre, paper, and glass are treated according to their limits and capacities, not forced into uniformity.
Traces of labour are not concealed. They are recorded as part of the object’s present state. The goal is not perfection, but stability and clarity.
Each intervention is documented as a discrete phase in the object’s life.
Stabilisation & Custodianship (The Finished)
Once intervention is complete, the object is assessed for long-term use and care.
Every accession is issued a Registry number and accompanying documentation detailing its condition, material composition, and handling requirements. This record establishes the object’s place within the Archive and defines the responsibilities of its future custodian.
Ownership is not framed as possession, but as stewardship. The objects leaves the Archive prepared to continue its life with clarity, restraint, and durability.
Reference Documentation
All interventions are governed by internal standards outlined in The Velvet Clove Compendium, a reference document defining principles of light, shadow, handling, and display.
The Archive does not operate by intuition alone. It operates by record.
